Chapter 2

The Flowering of Human Consciousness.

"Seeing beauty in a flower could awaken humans, however briefly, to the beauty that is an essential part of their own innermost being, their true nature."

Eckhart Chapter 2 Highlights:

  • "The quicker you are attaching verbal or mental labels to things, people, or situations, the more shallow and lifeless your reality becomes, and the more deadened you become to reality, the miracle of life that continuously unfolds within and around you."

  • "Words reduce reality to something the human mind can grasp, which isn't very much."

  • "In seeing of who you are not, the reality of who you are emerges by itself. This what happens as you slowly and carefully read this and the next chapter, which are about the mechanics of the false self we call the ego."

  • "Most people are still completely identified with the incessant stream of mind, of compulsive thinking, most of it repetitive and pointless."

Stefan’s Thoughts/Notes:

  • [Stefan] Words are labels. A tree is more than just a 'tree'.

  • [Stefan] When we are quick to label things, we steal the creativity/beauty that can emerge from them.

  • [Stefan] Labels - mother, father, husband, wife. If I cannot act as mother, who am I? If I, the father, cannot bring home the money, who am I?

  • [Stefan] My past become labels today. Ultimately just thoughts. Most likely not helpful thoughts.

  • [Stefan] Compulsive thinking. Compulsive thoughting. To be absorbed in our thoughts - to be unaware of everything around us (unaware of family, friends, etc). Lost in 'unhelpful' thoughts.

  • [Stefan] I need the answer. If I do not find it, do I have value, do I lose points.
